How to Do Generative Engine Optimization: An 8-Step Practical Guide
By the ListicleWriter.ai team · Updated 2026-09-30
This is a hands-on checklist for generative engine optimization (GEO): the steps we follow to make a page easy for ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Copilot to understand and cite. Each step is self-contained, so you can apply them one at a time to pages you already have.
Step 1: Choose questions, not just keywords
AI answer engines respond to questions, so start from the exact questions your customers ask. Use search data (Semrush, Google Search Console, “People also ask” boxes), your support emails and sales calls. Group them into clusters — for example, a “what is” question, a “how to” question and a “best options” question on the same topic.
Each cluster becomes one page with one main answer. Trying to answer ten unrelated questions on one page makes every passage weaker.
Step 2: Put a one-sentence answer at the top
Open with a direct definition or answer in plain language, ideally under 40 words. This is the sentence most likely to be quoted. Avoid long warm-up introductions — an AI system scanning for the answer may skip a page that never states it clearly.
Then expand: why it matters, who it applies to, and what the reader should do next.
Step 3: Write self-contained chunks
Break the page into sections of roughly 100–300 words, each under a descriptive heading that could stand alone as a question. Every chunk should make sense if it were copied out of the page on its own: repeat the subject by name instead of saying “it” or “this tool”, and include any needed context inside the section.
- Good heading: “How much does Pro Publisher cost?”
- Weak heading: “Pricing thoughts”
- Good opening: “Pro Publisher costs $79 per month for 100 listicles.”
Step 4: Add evidence and name your sources
Specific numbers with a named source are easier for AI systems to trust than vague claims. Where you have first-hand experience — prices you paid, results you measured, products you tested — say so and describe how you know. Link to primary sources rather than to other summaries. If a fact is uncertain, say that too; honesty is itself a trust signal.
Step 5: Use comparison tables and pros/cons
Tables compress a lot of meaning into a structure machines read easily. For any page that compares options, include a table with consistent columns (price, best for, key feature, limitation). Pair it with honest pros and cons for each option. Pages that only praise are less useful to readers and, increasingly, to AI systems looking for balanced answers.
Step 6: Add schema markup
Structured data tells machines what each part of your page is. For most GEO pages, add Article (with author/organisation and date), FAQPage for your question-and-answer section, and ItemList for ranked or grouped lists. Validate it with Google's Rich Results Test. Schema will not force a citation, but it removes ambiguity about your content.
Step 7: Show trust signals everywhere
Make it obvious who is behind the page: an author or organisation name, an update date, a contact page, a physical business address and clear policies. Add descriptive image file names and alt text that match the topic. Link related pages together so both readers and crawlers can see your depth on the subject.
Step 8: Keep pages crawlable, then measure
GEO still depends on the basics: pages must load fast, be listed in your sitemap and be allowed in robots.txt, including for AI crawlers you want to reach you. Submit your sitemap to Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools — Bing's index powers Copilot and feeds several other AI tools.
To measure, test your target questions in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google, note whether you are cited, and watch referral visits from AI tools in your analytics. Update pages every few months so dates and facts stay current.
How to do GEO for UK audiences
If your customers are in the United Kingdom, apply every step above with UK signals: British spelling (optimisation, organise), prices in pounds, UK-based examples and retailers, and a UK contact address if you have one. Submit your sitemap to Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools as normal — there is no separate UK index. ListicleWriter.ai’s en-GB market handles spelling and currency for you, making it a practical UK AI content and listicle generator.

Strengths
- Each step can be applied to existing pages
- Improves readability for humans as well
- Uses free tools for measurement
- Works for any language or market
Limitations
- Citations are not guaranteed by any checklist
- Measuring AI citations still takes manual testing
- Evidence and first-hand experience take real effort
- Needs regular updates to stay current
Frequently asked questions
How long does GEO take to work?
It depends on how quickly search engines crawl your page and how competitive the question is. New pages often need days to weeks to be indexed; being cited can take longer. Submitting your sitemap to Google and Bing speeds up discovery.
Do I need to rewrite my whole site for GEO?
No. Start with the pages that answer your customers' most common questions. Add a clear top answer, split long text into self-contained sections, add a table and FAQ, then add schema.
What schema is best for generative engine optimization?
Article, FAQPage and ItemList cover most informational and comparison pages. Add Organization markup site-wide with your name, address and contact details.
How do I know if AI tools cite my site?
Ask your target questions in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot and Google, and check the sources listed. In your analytics, look for referral visits from domains such as chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai.
Can AI write GEO content for me?
AI can draft structured, citation-ready content quickly — that is what ListicleWriter.ai does. You should still check facts and add your own experience before publishing.
